Gyroplane R. 101 VH-MVB

This experimental rotary wing aircraft was designed and developed by Mr John Blackler within the Aviation Division of Victa Limited, Sydney. The project was commenced in 1959 and flying tests were carried out in 1962 at Camden Airport, the test pilot being Mr R Green.

The Victa Gyroplane was designed to be simple to fly, of low cost and yet to have most of the operational features of a helicopter. After a pre-spin at take-off, the two bladed rotor was always in the auto-rotative state in flight thus there was no need for a tail rotor. Although the R.101 gave good performance in its trials, Victa Ltd did not go into production and this experimental aircraft was the only one built. Mr John Blackler donated the Gyroplane to the Museum in July 1967.
