Beaufighter (cockpit) 156 Mk 21 A8-386

The cockpit of A8-386 was found in the Railway Workshop, Hume Highway Chullora, Sydney where Beauforts and Beaufighters were built during WWII. The cockpit was donated by the NSW Government Railways in 1970 to the Museum. When found it was still in the original transport box along with the Museum's Beaufort cockpit where they had been stored since the end of the Second World War. "Harry's Baby" was painted on the cockpit for the retirement of Harry Carroll, Head Production Planning during Beaufighter production. It is believed that had the cockpit not been painted for the retirement then it never would have been "re-discovered" when the Museum made the initial enquiry.

This cockpit is brand new and has never seen service. The hole in the windscreen was thus not made in active service and may have been made in an experiment testing armour glass or ammunition.
