Sea Fury F.B. MkII VW647

Manufactured by Hawker Aircraft Company, England and dispatched from the UK in May 1949, via HMAS Sydney, for service with RAN Fleet Air Arm. The aircraft operated with the Fleet Air Arm, 20th CAG, 805 Squadron on HMAS Sydney and with 723 Squadron based at HMAS Albatross. The aircraft was approved for issue from the Department of Works, Commonwealth Experimental Building Station, North Ryde on the 15th January 1959 to create high speed airflow to test modern high rise window glass and surround structure.

The Museum acquired the aircraft in October 1969. The Sea Fury prototype flew in 1945 and was designed to fill a need for a long range escort fighter in the Pacific campaign. Its low altitude maneuverability made for effective service in ground attack role. The Sea Fury was the fastest single engine prop-driven fighter to serve in Australia's armed forces and the RAN continued to use it for search and destroy duties until after 1955 when it was replaced by the Sea Venom aircraft. The Sea Furies gave distinguished service when flown by 805 and 808 Squadrons from HMAS Sydney in combat with MiG 15s in Korea.
